Stop Work Authority

Stop Work Authority (SWA) is a program created to provide employees and contract workers with the freedom and responsibility to stop work when a dangerous condition or behavior may result in an unwanted event.

While your employer has a legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for you and your colleagues, oftentimes, the very nature of the job is dangerous. That’s why SWA is such an asset to any employee.

If you see or experience anything that causes you concern for your safety or the wellbeing of those with whom you are working, you have the right and authority, regardless of rank or title, to halt operations. 

In pausing any operational proceedings, you create an opportunity to accurately inspect the working conditions and abilities of all involved in order to determine whether or not it is safe to continue working. If it is unsafe to continue, notify your employer and work with your team to recommend modifications that will allow you to complete the project in a safer setting.
